How to Properly Clean Your Windows: Our Tried-and-True Cleaning Process

Published on

Windows are essential to your home’s beauty and comfort; they offer a beautiful view of your outdoor space, protect the inside of your home from the elements and they let in sunlight to brighten up your home. Because they are so key to a home, they receive a lot of action. It’s important to keep your windows clean so that they keep functioning as they should.

Window glass can get dirty pretty quickly, particularly with little hands or pets in the home, but lucky for you glass cleaning is pretty simple. Many Pella Windows and Doors windows have easy-clean features that also make it painless to clean the exterior of your windows from indoors, too. Looking for easy to manage, new window cleaning process? Here’s what Pella Windows and Doors swears on:

  1. Begin by brushing off your window sill with a small broom or brush. The dirt and dust that accumulates on the sill and ledges will remain there for a long time otherwise, and brushing will also prevent smearing on the glass later on. You should not use the same cleaning duster that you will eventually use to clean the glass!
  2. Run your vacuum’s dusting brush attachment over the side of your window screen that faces inside. You can also use this vacuum piece to grab any leftover dirt and dust along your sills.
  3. Use a premixed vinegar-based cleaning solution, or an ammonia-free glass cleaner like Windex® or Sparkle® to clean your glass. You can blend your own vinegar-based solution by mixing one-part white vinegar to 10 parts water. Apply your cleaner generously to a clean, lint-free cloth or paper towel and wipe down your glass from a variety of different directions for the best clean.
  4. After the cleaning, let your windows air dry and then rinse your glass with clean water if you see streaks.

Here are some more tips, too! We recommend cleaning your windows on a cloudy day because the sun will dry the cleaning solution too quickly and leave streaks on your glass. Also, our Pella Windows and Doors professionals prefer microfiber cloths since they are the least likely to leave tiny particles behind.

Take care of your attractive view, protection barrier and light source by keeping your windows clean throughout the year.
